| World's Fastest Man ![]() What potion of the American public knows who Tyson Gay is? Maybe 1 percent? If Gay runs a year from now in Beijing like he ran today in Osaka, everyone will know who he is. Gay overtook Asafa Powell in the world championships of the 100 meters today, finishing in 9.85 seconds to win his first gold medal at a major international meet and establish himself as a favorite to win the sprint title at next year's Summer Olympics. Powell, the Jamaican world record holder, got off to an early lead but couldn't hang on. Gay overtook Powell late, and Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas did, too. Atkins finished second in 9.91; Powell was third in 9.96. The 100 meters is the classic sprint event, but track and field just isn't popular enough in the United States to make the world champ a household name. But the Olympics are popular enough. If Gay does this next year, he'll be a superstar. Tyson Gay: World's Fastest Man - FanHouse - AOL Sports Blog |
