Cool 2006 Kentucky Derby

Anybody out there into the Kentucky Derby? I used to really follow Harness Racing. I don't regularly follow Thoroughbreds but I always get interested around now. I read up everything I can on the race, read racing forms, etc....and make some wagers on the Derby...And then wihtout exception - I lose.

It's usually a crowded field and the favorite hasn't won in a long time. So if you're going to throw a few bucks in and bet some long shots, this is your spot. Some real long shots have come in here the past few years. And even if you throw darts at a board, it's as good a system as any.

Brother Derek will be the early favorite since he cruised to a win at Santa Anita a few days ago against other 3 year olds.

Re: 2006 Kentucky Derby

I was a greyhound trainer for 25 years. All I know about thoroughbred racing is that when the horses were done as racers, the dogs wound up eating them!

Cool Re: 2006 Kentucky Derby

I have all sorts of combinations with 5 horses . All straight closers: Jazil, Steppenwolfer, Showing Up, Cause to Believe & Storm Treasure. This race is always so crazy - 120,000 people, a crowded track and nervous horses. Hopefully there's a major speed duel and the speed & stalkers tire.

Re: 2006 Kentucky Derby

This horse that won looks like the real deal. Usually the Preakness field is trimmed by quite a bit as the speedsters head there while the closers wait for the belmont. It would be nice to see a triple crown winner again.

Cool Re: 2006 Kentucky Derby

This was supposed to be the most competetive Kentucky Derby ever? I wouldn't bet on the Preakness. Barbaro is going to be a 2 to 5 favorite. Smaller field, shorter stretch. Unless something absolutely wacky happens, there's no way he loses the race. (With the way I pick races, you might want to run out and take every other horse in the field).

Re: 2006 Kentucky Derby

Brother Derek will give Barbaro a run for the money in the Preakness. Brother was at a disadvantage running out of the 18 hole and forced to run 4 horses wide at the turns. Entering the final turn he was moving well until bumped hard and forced several yards further outside on the turn. I used to go to the horse races regularly in Southern California at Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, and Del Mar. Living in Tucson there are no tracks near here and no information at all in the local paper, so my interest has waned somewhat. I have attended the Breeder's Cup twice, once in Santa Anita and once at Hollywood Park. Hit a pick 6 for more than $25,000 one lucky sunday at Santa Anita. Watch for Brother Derek to make a strong showing at the Preakness.

You hit the nail right on the head Brother Derek had a horrible trip in the Derby and still wound up 4th. I think Barbaro will really get tested in the Preakness, you also have to remember that he is a young horse, the universal birth of all racehorses is Jan. 1st. He was born in April which makes him 2yrs.8 months but technically he qualifies as a 3 year old. And another thing he's coming back on short rest, this is not the norm. for him. His trainer likes him to have more time between races. So this race should be very Interesting. Having said all that he'll probably blow the field away!!
