Cool Barbaro euthanized

This is so sad. It makes me wonder how ethical horse racing is.

Re: Barbaro euthanized

It sucked watching him get injured in that race.

What I don't like is it seems every year some horce gets the hype for the triple crown run but nobody has come close except maybe Smarty Jones?

Re: Barbaro euthanized

'the right decision' would have been doing something like curing cancer instead of spending millions on an already dead horse.

Re: Barbaro euthanized

They did go to great lengths, yes, but they loved this animal. I understand that.
Nice dog food comment, there.
They did what they had to. i felt, seeing the headline this morn, just sad. It was past being about $$$. it was about a horse these people had grown to care about.
There was a horrible accident up here in Toronto about a year ago and a policeman's horse was hit by a car, and they had to put him down. thousands showed up for this animal's funeral. The face of the cop was heart breaking. People give a damn, that's all.

Cool Re: Barbaro euthanized

While running is a natural thing for horses to do (unlike the circus - I'm sorry but it's not natural for an elephant to stand on his tippie toes), I really wonder whether it's cruel in a way to race horses. Well, see you later, I'm going to Belmont

Re: Barbaro euthanized

I thought horses were made to run. i thought that's why nature gave them big lungs and a protective rib cage.

Re: Barbaro euthanized

I would think anyone who has an animal in their life would understand.
if they wanted to make babies, then i'm sure science could have done a withdrawal of sperm for the future. They did it for that soldier's family, they can do it for a Derby winner.
he wasn't going to run again. This was about saving an animal.

As cruel as it might sound I agree. I have an animal but it is a whole different ball of wax. If I were to go to extrordinay lengths it would because I care for the pet and that is all. The owners of the horse had mega money invested and if they couldn't get the return from racing then why not use it for breeding purposes. There is no sin in that ... just tell it like it is. I'm sure they cared for the horse but I'll bet they were looking for a return on their investment also.

Re: Barbaro euthanized

Then let's say, it involves both.
I get so tired of the Not giving a damn about anything but Money thing.
i don't argue money was invested and they wanted a return on that and more, but how do you nurture something without starting to give a damn?

I, for one, did not say they didn't care. If I had mega bucks invested in an animal that should be making me money and it came up lame and unable to perform in that capacity I would surely be looking for an alternative way to re-coup my investment. That doesn't make them bad people. I would do the same.

Re: Barbaro euthanized

The bottom line with Barbaro is that there was NEVER a chance he would recover. It just does not happen. When he first got injured I posted that he would have to be put down. It is very unfortunate but these people should have saved him all of the pain, trials, and tribulations that he went through. Instead they tried to reinvent the wheel and then spun it like it would hep other horses that go through this process.

yes, horses were made to run. But they weren't made to be put in front of 100,000 people and put into starting gates and whipped, etc...
