Unhappy Bam Bam Bigelow Passes Away

*I know pro wrestling isn't discussed here but I felt it was alright in this circumstance.*

Bam Bam Bigelow (real name, Scott Bigelow) was found dead earlier today in his Florida home by his girlfriend. Bigelow, 45, had been retired from the wrestling ring since 2004 and was in a serious motorcycle accident (in October 2005, both he and his girlfriend were in critical condition). Both were said to have made recoveries although Bigelow continued to have a back injury stemming from his days in the wrestling ring.

Bigelow wrestled across the globe including almost every major promotion in the United States as well as having success over in Japan. He's probably best remembered for wrestling NY Giants great Lawrence Taylor in 1995.

During his career, he weighed as much as 430 pounds but was so agile he could do moonsaults off the ropes. He will no doubt be uniquely remembered for his bald head which was covered in tatoo's.

The Pasco County Sheriff has said no cause of death is known yet and an autopsy will be done soon.

The Asbury Park native will be missed by family, friends and fans alike.

R.I.P. Bam Bam

Story from Dave Meltzer and another story.

That's a shame... he was a good one. The match against LT stunk, but at least he was trying to carry him for the good of the promotion the company was getting out of it. So many of these guys aren't with us anymore -- Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, Road Warrior Hawk, now Bam Bam. It's a shame.

No luck here, either... all I can find is the original January announcement that says cause of death wouldn't be know "for a few weeks". If anyone hears, would you please post it? Thanks!

How did he die?

Some say it was from a broken heart, missing precious time with his children. Others contend the 45-year-old succumbed to a profession that grinds up top athletes like no other.

"It's scary," Apollo added. "I've got group pictures where I'm the only one still alive."

The medical examiner's office will have its say when the toxicology reports are released, although foul play is not suspected. But regardless of the findings, it was a sad ending for someone whose life had been so colorful.
The Asbury Park Post ran this article February 11. Great read. Freakin' sad, too.

This is from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer:

"--The autopsy results have come in on Bam Bam Bigelow. His death was due to multiple drugs in his system, cocaine and benzodiazetine (an anti-anxiety drug) at lethal levels. His was also suffering from heart disease."

Sadly, it's not a surprise.

Re: Bam Bam Bigelow Passes Away

Well, I guess the inevitable question is, "Did pro wrestling do this to Bam?"

It's not like he's the first one to get chewed up by the life.....

Re: Bam Bam Bigelow Passes Away

Well it wasn't pro wrestling that killed him (they didn't force him to do illegal drugs) but it seemed like he went through a terrible string of bad events over the past few years. His body was beat up, he went through a messy divorce, his private business (a burger joint I believe) in Jersey closed or went bankrupt and he hadn't seen his kids in a long time. Then he had that serious motorcycle accident with his girlfriend who nearly died and he was still going to be charged with something stemming from the accident.

A shame. It really is, because since his passing all of people's (wrestlers) memories of him are great. He was known as a good guy who would helped people (a few years ago he ran into a burning building and saved a group of kids) and even younger wrestlers who weren't stars. He was a good guy.

Re: Bam Bam Bigelow Passes Away

I never liked him as a good guy, but he made the story lines enjoyable when he was the bad guy. He always made you believe he hated anybody he was going up against. It was a sad loss.

Re: Bam Bam Bigelow Passes Away

I just remembered something...

Anyone here ever play the orignal WrestleMania on nintendo? I'm talking about the one from way back. The first one, I believe. Bam was a bad-arse in that game.

I would mop up Hulk and Macho Man all day with him.
