| Re: Sportsman of the Year Yea that was Indian River HighSchool, pretty close to where I am now. As far as sportsman of the year I would go with.... Derek Jeter Great guy off the field donating to charity and what not, hes the face of baseball. Not to mention an MVP calibur year that was shot down by some sportswriter in Chicago who ranked him 6th!

I think the only real MLB candidates are Tony La Russa and maybe Ryan Howard. |

| Re: Sportsman of the Year Jeter didnt deserve it? Come on you are definitely selling him short. And as far as an MLB sportsman of the year, why not DJ? Ryan Howard won the MVP and didnt put his team in the playoffs. DJ won a gold glove and had a career year. Tony LaRussa didnt do anything special in my eyes, yea his team won the World Series. But he didnt hold his team together during the Reg Season. That was a pretty pitiful Reg Season record. Oh well I guess I am a bit of a homer but still DJ is the clean face of baseball. An excellent well rounded person who does as much for the community as his everyday effort for the Yanks. No jealousy, never less than 100% effort. DJ is the man maybe hes not this years sportsman of the year, but in my eyes he should always be considered |

| Re: Sportsman of the Year I agree with the Larussa one, but it's not Player Of The Year, its Sportsman Of The Year, and Jeter wasnt the Sportsman of the year imo, Howard was more visible, I come from another forum where the Phillies are the hot thing, and he was everywhere from whatI've heard, at schools, speaking, etc....and as far as Jeter, Howard had better stats, and it is Most VALUBLE, you take Jetere from the Yankees, theyre still gonna be good(they'll go buy someone, but still, theyll be good) You take Howard from the Phils, there is no team...

It's not that type of award like that. It's for the best sportsman of the year...lol, not just an MVP or anything like that. Here's a list of previous winners... The only baseball players/teams to win the SI award since 1954 are: Stan Musial, Sandy Koufax, Carl Yastremski (sp?), Tom Seaver, Pete Rose, Willie Stargell, Orel Hershieser, Cal Ripken Jr., Sosa/McGwire, Schilling/Johnson, Boston Red Sox. |

| Re: Sportsman of the Year Ryan Howard would be a good choice, as would LaRussa, who does alot for animals and runs an adoption center. Woods is too much of a dictator of his own image, but does do alot of great things behind the scenes for charities. Now I'll throw out a notion that may fly. How about an athlete that almost died in pursuit of his goals, had a huge win on his sport's biggest stage, and has the whole country going for him as he overcomes staggering odds? Barbaro! You read it here first folks. Now get behind it now while it is still only an idea, because the second someone else thinks of it that matters, it is going to come to fruition.

| Re: Sportsman of the Year I know what the awrd is for, you need to have achievement in some sense. But whatever I am outtie when it comes to this topic, to me Ryan Howard did not represent "the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement." Anyway Jeter has never won the award and always stands up to this statement. However, since I cant have Jeter then Tiger Woods. |
