Great Sports Writers

So I was reading Bill Simmons' sports column about how horrible the NBA Eastern Conference is via espn.com, and I came across this:

Quote:

And then the check comes and they're completely floored by the total. Wait, it's how much??? So they spend the next 25 minutes figuring out who owes what, and there are always 2-3 people who didn't bring enough cash, so somebody has to cover them (and they're ☻☻☻☻ed off about it), and then there's a girl who left early because she has a kid, and she left only $40 when it's $75 per person (so everyone's ☻☻☻☻ed off about that), and then there's the one slutty friend who got housed and wants to stick around because she thinks she might have a chance to knock boots with one of the waiters, so one of the other girls has to stay to keep an eye on her and make sure the bus boy doesn't get involved, and there's so much drama going on that everyone ends up leaving with a bad taste in their mouth and forgetting that they had a barrel of fun for the first three hours.
(Translation: The Heat mortgaged the second half of the decade to win one championship. And they did. Now they're looking at the check and saying, "Wait, it's how much?")
Great analogy. Simmons probably isn't my favorite sports writer, but he is quite entertaining. My vote would go to Hunter S. Thompson, for all the obvious reasons...

So, I pose the question:

Who is (are) your favorite sports writer(s), and why?

Mention particular pieces, if possible, but I'd like to know why you like their work.

--WTF

Hmm, interesting question. I like a lot of John Feinstein stuff - A Civil War, the little book he did about Tiger Woods, among the most recent I've read. Rick Reilly's column is S.I. is sometime quite good. Most of what I read are autobiographies through.

Sean Powell of Newsday is a great columnist.
Here's one of his more recent columns.

JoeytheKing23:
Do you have any of your work, which you would like to share? (Optional )

I wrote some sports columns back in the day. However, sports blogging isn't for me.

Re: Great Sports Writers

I'm a fan.

I went sifting through some of Rushin's archives and came up with this little article.

He's got a wonderful literary voice.
