| Birk Jumping On Effort To Help Retired Players Vikings center Matt Birk apparently will announce plans on Tuesday to donate a portion of his December 23 game check to Gridiron Greats, a fund that provides financial assistance to retired NFL players. Birk and others will appear at a press conference on Tuesday at Birk's restaurant in Minneapolis. Though Birk won't comment, it's believed that he and other active players will be pitching in. Recently, Chiefs offensive tackle Kyle Turley said that he'll donate $25,000 as part of "Gridiron Guardian Sunday," and Not-So-Crazy Joe Davola's contribution has been matched by the likes of John McEnroe, Bob Costas, and Charles Barkley. | Re: Birk Jumping On Effort To Help Retired Players Good for them. If the union as an entity won't do anything, it's nice to see the current players looking our for the welfare of those who blazed the trail for them, and make it possible for them to earn their multimillion dollar contracts.
