Vikes Wont Operate On Peterson

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Minnesota Vikings have decided that running back Adrian Peterson, the No. 7 overall pick in the draft, will not need surgery on the fractured collarbone that he re-injured during the Fiesta Bowl.
Per Schefter, the situation will be monitored and re-evaluated soon.
Last week, agent Ben Dogra said that the decision as to whether surgery will be needed would be made by the team that picks Peterson.
It's still unclear whether Peterson will be available for offseason workouts without surgery.
Meanwhile, a reader has pointed out to us that the Vikings' official web site lists seventh-round quarterback Tyler Thigpen of Coastal Carolina as a wide receiver. If the team moves him to wideout, it means that four of the Vikings' eight draft picks were used to address this position.
Given that Peterson spent much of his Pro Day workout catching passes from a receiver position in the slot and split wide, the Vikes have picked up five players in the draft who could help address the most glaring weakness on a team that not all that long ago had the best pass-catching tandem in the league.

Whew, I dunno... I think I'd want my #1 pick to have the surgery as soon as possible. If you're counting on this kid long-term, better to get him fixed up as soon as possible. Anyone know offhand how long A.D. would be out if he does undergo the procedure?

I agree lefty, I can understand the vikes not wanting him to miss any time but even if he has to miss some time upfront, its better than gambling with it making it worse if it gets reinjured..

This type of injury doesn't really benefit from surgery as they essentially need to rebrake the collarbone and put a plate in. Leave this to mother nature and let it continue to heal on its own. If it does break again then the surgery can be performed.

Post Vikings' Peterson won't need surgery

Adrian Peterson has been cleared for takeoff.

The Minnesota Vikings' first-round draft pick will not need surgery to repair a collarbone that was broken twice last season, an injury that might have caused him to slip to the seventh pick in April's NFL draft.

The Vikings said Wednesday that the injury was healing fine on its own and they will not have to insert a protective plate to prevent further injury, a procedure that would have kept the former Oklahoma running back out of action for three to six months.
