'Tis the summer of the Vikings fans' discontent

Bob Lurtsema hears it everywhere these days. In Twin Cities grocery stores. On Florida beaches. Inside corporate conference rooms.

"I have never seen so much discontent from Minnesota Vikings fans," said Lurtsema, who joined the team in 1972 and has been the team's unofficial ambassador for some 30 years.

"So many people are telling me they have no confidence in what the organization is doing," Lurtsema added. "They're saying, 'I give up. I'm not renewing my season tickets. I don't know if I can support this team anymore.'"

Worse -- after watching the Vikings finish 6-10 last season, followed by an exodus of disgruntled players and a modest foray into the free agent market -- Lurtsema counts himself among the disgruntled masses. He does not understand the organization's direction and questions its capacity to improve, a sentiment Lurtsema said has afflicted a "cross-section" of Vikings fans.
