SLAM! Sports, Canada - 12 hours ago
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Vikings released three former starters on Thursday: cornerback Fred Smoot, tight end Jermaine Wiggins, and tackle Mike Rosenthal.

Smoot's tenure was marked by injuries, violations of team rules and a disorderly conduct charge for his actions at the infamous boat party in October 2005. After signing a six-year contract worth up to US$34 million with a $10.8-million bonus, Smoot had three interceptions in two seasons with Minnesota.

Wiggins led the Vikings in receptions in 2004 and 2005, but he never found a niche with new coach Brad Childress and had only 46 catches for 386 yards with one touchdown in 2006.

Re: Vikings cut CB Fred Smoot

I guess this mean's no more boat parties in Minnesota, eh?

Seriously, Smoot was brought in to be a franchise corner and failed miserably. Not totally convinced anyone else will sign him.

Though he did get picked up by the 'Skins, he definitely is not the same as he once was. He was benched in favor of our 2nd round rookie, and he was consistently beat. It all started 2 years ago against the Panthers when he was burned by Steve Smith. He went 1 on 1, which was stupid when Winfield is the better cover guy, and he had no help. He went downhill ever since that game.
