Daunte Culpepper Trade

Looks like the Daunte Culpepper trade is official. He's been traded to the Miami Dolphins for a second round NFL draft pick.

It's amazing how fast he went from awesome to the bottom. With Moss leaving a year ago, was the wiritng on the wall for the Daunte Culpepper trade then? Sounds like the knock on Culpepper has been an inability to read defenses.

Who's going to be the new Vikings starting QB after the trade?

I like this trade for Miami. It gives them a marquee QB who still has a great chance to bounce back from a bad few games last year.

Brad Johnson will probably be the starter going into the season. He played very well last year and might still have a year or two in the tank. That should give Minnesota time to find a young QB for the future.

Well, in the meantime, it'll be Brad Johnson I think. They were one of the teams in the Brees sweepstakes, but he's signed with New Orleans. Kitna's off the market too, though Jamie Martin and Josh McCown are available. They might want to try to swing a deal with Washington for Patrick Ramsay. Maybe they'll even try to trade up in the draft. But I think they have to do something. They can't go into the year with just Brad Johnson.

By the way, all Minnesota got for him was a 2007 2nd round pick. Bad deal for the Vikes.

Re: Daunte Culpepper Trade

It wasn't that bad a deal. If they didn't get the 2nd rounder they would have cut him and got nothing. By trading him they also save a lot of money including, I believe, a $6 mil roster bonus he was due. Their options were keep him and have 2 disgruntled QBs leading the team (Culpepper and Johnson), cut him and get nothing, or trade him for the 2nd rounder. All things considered they took the best option of the 3.

Re: Daunte Culpepper Trade

His value was next to nothing once it got out that they were looking to dump him. I hope they get someone besides Brad Johnson. Maybe Billy Volek, the Titans back up. Don't know if he is available but he's not too bad.

Re: Daunte Culpepper Trade

They picked up Mike McMahon, late of the Eagles and Lions today. Kid has some potential, but has been shaky throughout his career. Not as good as Volek, but he should make a serviceable backup to Johnson, don't you think?
