In weak NFC, Vikings manage to remain in hunt for playoff spot

DETROIT — The Minnesota Vikings are in the playoff picture even though they’re two games under .500 after losing five of six games.

“It’s kind of crazy,” Minnesota offensive guard Steve Hutchinson acknowledged. “Obviously we need to capitalize and win the remaining four games for us to have a shot.”

As usual in December, the Detroit Lions (2-10) have only pride at stake.

Vikings Find Success in an Unusual Place

(Sports Network) - After losing five of their last six games and suffering the loss of top offensive threat Chester Taylor to an ankle injury the week before, the Minnesota Vikings were in need of more than a spark when they headed to Detroit on Sunday.

The Vikings needed something more akin to an inferno. And lo and behold, they got it.

That staggering run defense was at it again, holding the Lions to minus-three rushing yards for the day.

Detroit's bumbling, stumbling offense fanned the flames by contributing six turnovers to the cause.

But the 30-20 road win will be best remembered for the work of Taylor's replacement, a player that had all of nine carries in 2006 entering the day and had previously been deemed not good enough to play for the dreadful Lions.
