Culpepper Trade Rumors

A Daunte Culpepper trade seems almost certain at this point, but to what team? Two possible canidates appear to be Baltimore and Miami, according to recent reports.

One from the Minneapolis Star Tribune:
"The Baltimore Ravens apparently were among the teams the Vikings contacted last week in an effort to gauge the trade value of quarterback Daunte Culpepper, but no deal with the Ravens or any other team appears imminent."

The other from the Miami Herald:
"The Dolphins have held talks with the Minnesota Vikings over the past week about a possible trade involving Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper."

If the Vikings deal Daunte, do they go with Brad Johnson or try to acquire a new QB via free agency?

I thought Kyle Boller basically won everyone in Baltimore over with his performance down the stretch of last season.

Daunte in Miami would be a nice fit, a definite boost to a team that could use a big arm like he has.

As far as the Vikings go, Johnson can start but they would definitely need to get a 2nd QB who can play as well. I wouldn't want to rely on Johnson and his 30something body.

Not sure what the deal is with Boller, but the Ravens have been linked to both Culpepper and Kerry Collins. They definitely seem to be looking for another QB.

Man, talk about trading at the worst possible time. Culpepper's value has never been lower than it is right now. Poor Minnesota.

Re: Culpepper Trade Rumors

If we trade Daunte, we are definetly at a disadvantage. Like you said, he has a very low value right now. Plus the controversy never stops here. Now Daunte and Williams are asking for the sex boat scandal to be dropped due to Racial Discrimination. Huh. Weird

Re: Culpepper Trade Rumors

In an update from the Culpepper/Vikings relationship story...this is the latest news

here's the AP story...

Quote:
INNEAPOLIS (AP) - Daunte Culpepper's shaky relationship with the Minnesota Vikings deteriorated further on Wednesday when the quarterback said he had asked to be released if the team fails to trade him.

"If a trade does not happen then I am asking the Vikings to terminate my contract as soon as possible," Culpepper said in an e-mail to reporters.

Culpepper said he had asked the Vikings if he could speak to interested teams on his own behalf. He said Minnesota denied his request.

He said he appreciated that the team's new owner, Zygi Wilf, was willing to pay him a $6 million bonus due later this month.

"However, because of the fundamental differences I have with management regarding the approach to my personal and professional life, I think it is the best business decision for both parties to go our separate ways," Culpepper said.

He softened his message slightly by saying that if the team didn't honor his request, "then I intend to fulfill my contractual obligations to the Minnesota Vikings."

In a brief phone interview with The Associated Press, Culpepper said he had been angered by a recent e-mail he received from the team. He didn't elaborate on the contents of the e-mail.

Re: Culpepper Trade Rumors

What a mess. If they are forced to get rid of him, they really should just blow the team up and rebuild. With Culpepper, there's a slight chance they could sneak into the playoffs. Without him? None whatsoever.

Re: Culpepper Trade Rumors

The worst thing about this situation is he could be damaged goods. He tore 3 ligaments in his knee and may not be fully recovered. He is definately gone, just a question of what can they get for him. It won't be much. They may need to go after someone like Drew Brees, who is also coming off surgery. Brad Johnson was a stopgap, no way they do well going into a season with him as their number one. Kerry Collins might be a good fit for a year or two as they try to develop someone that they draft this year.

Re: Culpepper Trade Rumors

I’m not really sure what the Vikings’ strategy was by announcing to the world that he was going to be dealt by 12:01 Saturday morning. It seemed like they really limited their ability to at least try and get the most out of any trade. By saying the most out of any trade, it’s obvious that his trade value has taken a significant hit, especially since he is damaged goods as legend has suggested. Brad Johnson had a pretty decent year last year, but are you really going to go into the season with his as your #1? Not sure what better alternatives are out there, maybe a Jon Kitna, or the aforementioned Kerry Collins.
