Twins Did Best They Could

The Star Tribune spoke to several baseball insiders about the Johan Santana trade to attempt to figure out what happened. The overall consensus..."The common theme that emerged from those inside baseball is that Smith did the best he could with the little leverage he had. In the final four weeks before the deal, the Mets were the only team seriously trying to complete a trade after the Yankees and Red Sox virtually dropped out. Seattle and Texas had early interest, but Santana would not consider a trade to those teams."

The Santana trade: Lacking leverage, and timing

Of course they could have acquired Elsbury or Hughes if they pulled the trigger months ago...but they didn't.

Wow...the best he could...its one of those things you hate to be a GM for...one sided deals, where you got no leverage...did he try trading him to teams in Japan?...

See, he just waited too long. Lost any leverage he had. Should've taken Hughes when he had the chance.

Wow, that's still not enough...I want to go back to days before free agency...when we had MLB slavery...

I wouldn't go that far, but players having the right to pick and choose where they can get traded to? Not crazy about that. It's still a job, right?

Yep. To bad I can't trade two of my Engineers to Lockheed for 2 Programmers and a Secretary to be named later...

I would like to see that happen too. The days when teams could develop their own players and not have to worry about losing them to a higher market team.
