Johan Santana finished with a franchise-record 17 strikeouts in eight innings to lead the Minnesota Twins past the Texas Rangers 1-0 Sunday. Santana's 17 strikeouts were the most in the majors since Ben Sheets fanned 18 in Milwaukee's 4-1 win over Atlanta on May 16, 2004, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He broke the Minnesota record of 15, accomplished four times — the last by Bert Blyleven on Aug. 1, 1986, against Oakland.

Wood struck out 20 on May 6th, 1998 against Houston, nine years ago, but doesn't it seem like it was much more recent?
As for Santana, hard to believe he's only 13-9.

Johan Santana cast a confused gaze at Jason Tyner as his Minnesota Twins teammate approached with a handful of 20-dollar bills.

"You strike out 17, you get paid," Tyner said over his shoulder as he walked away.

The money was actually dues for the clubhouse fantasy football league, not a supplement to Santana's $13 million salary for his franchise-record pitching performance on Sunday afternoon.
