Twins trade Ortiz Quote:
The Minnesota Twins traded seldom-used pitcher Ramon Ortiz to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday for minor league infielder Matt Macri.
Ortiz might get more chances to pitch with Colorado, but judging by his moist, red eyes and stunned demeanor as he said goodbyes in the Twins' clubhouse late Wednesday afternoon, it won't be an easy change.
"I don't know what to think about. I don't know what to say," Ortiz said moments after the Twins announced the deal.
Minnesota signed Ortiz to a $3.1 million, one-year contract after the former Reds and Angels starter went 11-16 for Washington last year. The Twins demoted him to the bullpen in late May, but Ortiz said he never expected to be traded before the end of his first season with Minnesota.
"Sad for our ballclub, because we love this guy. He's very special," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Even when we sent him to the bullpen, he never lost his enthusiasm."
Ortiz has pitched in 28 games this season -- 18 out of the bullpen -- and is 4-4 with a 5.14 ERA.
