News broke today that Francisco Liriano will undergo tommy john surgery and will likely miss all of the 2007 MLB season. This is a tough break for the Twins who hoped he would be fine for the start of the season, but as it turns out, he will be going under the knife.

The good thing is that T.J. surgery is commonplace among pitchers in baseball these days and sometimes, players return better than ever.

Now doesn't this take the fire out of the Twins hopes of defending the NL Central crown or what.

Not totally unexpected, but a shame nonetheless. He had a brilliant start to his career last season. Let's hope it isn't over before it even has a change to really get going, you know? As you say, the Tommy John surgery is more common and more and more guys come back from it at full strength these days. Here's hoping Liriano's one of those guys.
