A judge ordered Milwaukee Bucks forward Ruben Patterson to pay a $1,000 fine for failing to register as a convicted sex offender after he moved into a new neighborhood. Patterson, 31, pleaded no contest Friday to the misdemeanor charge, said Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters. The fine was the maximum amount Hamilton County Municipal Judge Ted Berry could have imposed. Authorities sought the charge after a neighbor complained last month. Patterson moved into a $3.4 million home in the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill last November, according to county records.
Patterson's failure to register as a sex offender was an oversight, said Patterson's agent, Tim McGee.
"It's all behind him," said McGee, a former Cincinnati Bengals' wide receiver, on Saturday. "I've never in my life seen such a small issue turn into such a big story."
In 2001, when Patterson played for the Portland Trail Blazers, he entered a modified guilty plea in Washington state to third-degree attempted rape for allegedly forcing his children's nanny to perform a sex act on him. A judge suspended all but 15 days of a one-year sentence, and the NBA suspended Patterson for five games.
Patterson is an eight-year pro who averaged 14.7 points and 5.4 rebounds for the Bucks last season. He played at Cincinnati from 1996 to 1998.
