Re: Tony Gwynn Jr. to make MLB debut

Tony Gwynn Jr. - yes, the son of the legendary MLB hitter - has been called up to replace the injured Corey Koskie on the Brewers roster. This is his first stint in the majors after hitting .305 with 2 HR, 35 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 86 games with Triple-A Nashville. So, think he'll be a chip off the old block?

I doubt it. I think I saw on ESPN where he played his first game last night.

his dad only had onr season under .300 in the majors...which was his rookie year. I doubt Jr. can compare.

Cool Re: Tony Gwynn Jr. to make MLB debut

Based on the stats, they seem like different players. Tony Gwynn couldn't run and his son, with the 24 steals seems like he is more of a Kenny Lofton type.

Gwynn could run...early on before he became the stay puff marshmellow man he had 56 steals in 1987, 40 in 1989, and seasons of 37, 34, and 26 early...he also had over 10 triples 4 times...and 318 lifetime steals...the guy could run once upon a time...then he grew fat..

Wow. I stand corrected. I don't remember Gwynn stealing that many bases.

Re: Tony Gwynn Jr. to make MLB debut

There's no way the kid will be able to match his father's production...very few (if anyone) could. However, he should be a productive member of the Brewers while he's up. Brewers have a nice young core of players, now only if their pitching could do well.

Cool Re: Tony Gwynn Jr. to make MLB debut

I think it must be tough on the kids and the fathers where the father was better than the kid. Tough on the kid because he probably feels he can never live up. And tough on the father because almost every father wants his kids to do better than they did.....Not only Gwynn but Preston Mattingly who was drafted by the Dodgers is another one. Pete Rose, Jr....etc...Brian McCrae was never the player his father was.....There are probably others...

Re: Tony Gwynn Jr. to make MLB debut

Gwynn the 2nd got his first MLB hit yesterday -- 24 years to the day that his old man got HIS first hit! How about that? See, he's already following in his father's footsteps!
