Can the Brewers win the Central?

This is from SI.com's John Donovan:

"Nobody's saying that the National League Central will be a six-team cage match in 2006. The division is still the Cards, the Astros, the Cubs ... and everybody else. No other team has won a Central title since '95."

He then goes on to say that Milwaukee is "poised for their first winning season since 1992." I have to disagree. I think they've got enough talented young players to make a serious run at the NL Central crown. Anyone agree?

Re: Can the Brewers win the Central?

Another good story about the Brew Crew, this one from the AP.

Quote:
PHOENIX (AP) -- Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin is running out of patience.

And he's happy about it.

After three years of filling holes with prospects who might not quite be ready for the major leagues, Melvin and the Brewers enter the 2006 season with a more robust roster and a better idea of who will be playing where.

Melvin said the team's upcoming roster decisions shouldn't be as difficult as they have been in years past -- another sign of progress for a team coming off its first non-losing season since 1992.

"In the past, we maybe had a little more patience," Melvin said. "We're not going to have the same amount of patience in the big leagues, because we want to win."

And win now.
With guys like Fielder and Weeks, they are looking might good offensively. I just worry about their pitching staff. It looks as though Ben Sheets is out until at least mid-April, and Rick Helling could miss opening day with a sore elbow. Do they have the arms to compete in a crowded NL Central?

Cool Re: Can the Brewers win the Central?

The Brewers pretty much have no chance. Their pitching is just too weak. What happened to the days of the old Brew Crew? Yount, Molitor, Mike Caldwell, Gorman Thomas, Ben Oglivie, Teddy Higuera in the powder blue unis?

Those were classic teams.

Re: Can the Brewers win the Central?

I am a lifelong CUBS fan, moved from Chicago to Memphis 3 years ago (regret it). Milwaukee seems to be growing the talent right in my opinion, the question in my mind is them holding on to the talent long enough and how deep they are if injuries hit
