Lloyd Carr dutifully brushes away the retirement issue, but his words and mood betray him. As Michigan prepares to open Saturday against Appalachian State, there's no denying the possibility Carr's 13th season as coach, his 28th at the school, very well might be his last. Carr doesn't want to address it directly, for understandable reasons. He's not exactly a mushy sentimentalist, and he abhors distractions. He's also not sure what he wants to do with the rest of his life. And heck, he might not want to retire if Michigan stumbles and -- worst of all -- loses to Ohio State again. But he's 62 and set to open his first season without his mentor, Bo Schembechler, who passed away on the eve of last year's Ohio State game.
