Michigan LB Clint Copenhaver Up to the minute news about the Michigan Wolverines from GoTeamsGo. We'll find the latest Michigan Wolverines news so you can chat about here. Quote: Ex-linebacker true blue for Wolverines
Livingston Daily, MI - 1 hour ago
The 1998 Rose Bowl was the pinnacle of the perfect season for Clint Copenhaver and the rest of the University of Michigan Wolverines.
The former outside linebacker played on the 1997 co-national championship team, which defeated Washington State, 21-16, in the Jan. 1, 1998, Rose Bowl, to cap a perfect 12-0 record. Nebraska shared the title that year.
"What was special about that team is we had the No. 1 defense in the country," said Copenhaver, an Oceola Township resident and Brighton High School graduate. "What carried us our whole '97 season was our defense. We had Charles Woodson and an unbelievable defensive line. You can win a lot of games on defense alone."
The Rose Bowl still brings back fond memories — Copenhaver broke up two passes in the game. But, of course, the annual showdowns with rival Ohio State are also among Copenhaver's favorite games, including the 1997 meeting.
"There was so much on the line with that game," he said of U-M's 20-14 win. "It was a deciding factor whether we go to the Rose Bowl and play for the championship, or go to the Outback Bowl, or something like that."
