| Spartans NFL Draft EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton, who accounted for 8,036 total yards and 57 touchdowns as a three-year starter, has been selected by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2007 National Football League Draft Saturday, April 28. Stanton, the No. 11 pick in the second round and the No. 43 selection overall, becomes the first Spartan quarterback to be drafted in the second round since 1996 when Tony Banks went No. 42 overall to the St. Louis Rams. The 6-3, 230-pound Stanton earned team MVP honors for the second time in his career after accounting for 2,252 total yards and 17 TDs in 2006. The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award finalist completed 61 percent of his throws (164 of 269) for 1,807 yards, 12 TDs and 10 interceptions. Stanton also rushed 110 times for 445 yards and five scores. The Farmington Hills, Mich., native started 24 consecutive games at quarterback before sitting out the season finale at Penn State (suffered a concussion midway through the first quarter Nov. 11 vs. Minnesota). | Fields Selected By Miami In 2007 NFL Draft EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State punter Brandon Fields, a three-time All-Big Ten first-team selection, has been selected by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2007 National Football League Draft Sunday, April 29. Fields, the No. 15 pick in the seventh round and the No. 225 selection overall, becomes the first Spartan punter to be drafted since 2002 when Craig Jarrett went in the sixth round (No. 194) overall to the Seattle Seahawks. A first-team All-Big Ten selection by both the head coaches and media panel, Fields led the league and ranked No. 19 in the nation in punting with his 43.3-yard average in 2006. The Ray Guy Award semifinalist hit 17 punts 50 yards or more and had 16 kicks downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. | Ryan Chosen By St. Louis In 2007 NFL Draft EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Michigan State defensive tackle Clifton Ryan has been selected by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth round of the 2007 National Football League Draft Sunday, April 29. Ryan became the No. 17 pick in the fifth round and the No. 154 selection overall. It marks the fourth straight year that a Spartan defensive tackle has been drafted, as Ryan joins Matthias Askew (2004: Cincinnati, fourth round), Kevin Vickerson (2005: Miami, seventh round) and Domata Peko (2006: Cincinnati, fourth round). The 6-2, 302-pound Ryan led the Spartans in sacks (4 for 31 yards) and quarterback pressures (19) in 2006. He recorded 25 total tackles, including six for losses (34 yards), and ranked fifth on the team in production points (58.5). Ryan played the entire second half of the season with a calf injury.
