| Canes land top QB Hurricanes land a coveted quarterback BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN sdegnan@MiamiHerald.com The University of Miami got its guy this afternoon, and this one appears to be here to stay. Robert Marve, 17, the Tampa Plant High School quarterback who broke Tim Tebow's state records this season in leading Plant to the Class 4A state championship, orally committed to the Miami Hurricanes in a 4 p.m. ceremony at his field house. Though the commitment is nonbinding, Marve will make it official when he signs his letter of intent Feb. 7 to be the Hurricanes' quarterback of the future -- one that will considerably boost the value of coach Randy Shannon's first recruiting class. ''Coach Shannon is such a great guy, a guy I'll battle for and fight for and just play all out,'' said Marve, last week named the 2006 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football and this week named a Parade All-American. ``That was the spot for me.'' With Marve were his father Eugene, who played in the NFL for 11 seasons; his mother Julie; his sister Rebecca; his coach Robert Weiner; teammates and several other friends of the family. This past season, Marve surpassed Tebow, Florida's 2005 Mr. Football, for state records in passing yards (4,380), completions (280) and touchdowns (4 Marve also was named the Class 4A Player of the Year. The Hurricanes have had horrible luck with quarterback recruits in the past two signing classes, with three oral commitments changing their minds as signing day approached. Last year, Daniel Stegall opted for professional baseball and Pat Devlin switched to Penn State. In 2005, Derek Shaw switched to Arizona State. Most recently, Nick Fanuzzi changed his allegiance to Alabama -- where Marve was originally heading until former coach Mike Shula was fired. ---- Suck it, Saban. |
