It was a Dolphins whodunit. Florida Highway Patrol troopers found Channing Crowder's mangled 2007 pickup truck in the grassy shoulder of a northbound exit ramp from Florida's Turnpike at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday morning. Nearby: a palm tree mowed down at its base. But where was Crowder? And what about the items left behind: a firearm, crutches, an appointment book? The mystery was solved by Crowder himself, although his story, like his truck, veered off the path. Initially when contacted by WFOR CBS 4, Crowder said he had loaned the truck to a friend and that the friend had crashed it, the TV station's website reported. However, when troopers contacted him at his Davie home, he acknowledged that he had indeed been driving and that he had lost control of the pickup at the rain-slicked Hollywood Boulevard exit. And yes, rather than wait around in the rain, he caught a ride home from a friend, leaving the crunched truck on the roadside -- gun, crutches and all. End of story, except for the citations. Crowder, 24, was cited for careless driving, which is a moving infraction, and leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, which is a second-degree misdemeanor, said a spokesman for the Highway Patrol.
