Dolphins will trade down

Sounds like the Miami Dolphins are planning to trade down in April's NFL Draft.

When asked about the #1 overall pick by the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland said, "We're open for business."

It is the smart thing to do. They have so many needs. They need picks more than anything else.

Is it a good idea or a bad one making it so public, though? Could make them seem a little desperate and lower the value of the pick.

it could also work to their advantage if they say who the pick is. A team might get nervous about missing on their number 1 guy.

Yep if they trade down a few spots, and get Jake Long plus a couple extra picks in rounds 2 & 3 they could in better shape than if they just McFadden or Dorsey.

I like that scenario, bears. I *really* like that scenario.

Snag the can't miss o-line prospect and have extra picks to fill out the skill positions in rounds 2 & 3.

That would be good for them, but I think they could get more. There are potential HOF players in this draft. They should get the picks and a player.

Makes no diff. Everyone knows they are desperate.

Re: Dolphins will trade down

How about this.... Trade the #1 and next years #2 for Julius Peppers that instantly makes the Dolphins "D" much better. Long will only be a so-so player he isn't his father. Other ideas may include trading certain players to get picks but the #1 overall just doesn't have the luster this year.

You're kidding, right? After the year Peppers had, no way the Dolphins even give up the #1 overall for him straight up.

They are trying to rebuild. How does that help to give up two high picks to get a player that had a terrible year, and is showing a decline after 6 years. That would make no sense.

Re: Dolphins will trade down

Have you seen the Carolina Panthers? They are far removed from the Superbowl team. Peppers will be one of those players like Warren Sapp who goes to another team and becomes a superstar. He is far from done... as a matter of fact he will probably make the pro bowl next season. This year was a fluke brought on by playing for a terrible team. Imagine Peppers and Taylor as bookends.

Sorry, Stoney, I still think it's wishful thinking on your part. No way the Dolphins make that deal.

Why Peppers is only 27 and has many good years left. The problem is he will never be a team leader. Taylor on the other hand is a leader and would only make Peppers play that much more important. How many teams have used the #1 pick overall and come out successful? Peppers was the #1 when he came out. The guy needs to play with a different team Miami would be a perfect fit.

Peppers had one bad year and everyone thinks he is over the hill. He is too shy and quiet to be a team leader. So either Carolina needs a few fireballs on the D to help him out or he should go to another team. You are right that Taylor would bring the best out in him. Taylor is a fireball alright.
