| DT Holliday's Criticism Taken Out Of Context Dolphins defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday said Thursday that his comments published on a national publication's Web site in which he criticized the Dolphins for selecting returner/receiver Ted Ginn Jr. over quarterback Brady Quinn with their first-round pick were taken out of context. "With the ninth pick they took a guy who is basically a kick returner -- a hurt kick returner,'' Holliday told SportsIllustrated.com. "Here were are in June, and he hasn't been in camp yet. Maybe he'll come in eventually and become a better route-runner and make some plays. But I couldn't believe it then, and I can't believe it now." Holliday said Thursday that the writer of the article didn't misquote him but, "made something out of nothing,'' after Holliday recounted to him how he initially was stunned over the pick just like many angry Dolphins fans were at the team's draft party. "He turned it into me bashing the organization. I'm not criticizing the organization and Ginn. That's not what I did,'' Holliday said. "It was my initial shock of the selection. I'm a player. I have no idea about Ginn. There were quarterback concerns and Brady Quinn is just sitting there and I think we're picking him with the ninth pick and we don't. "Our scouts saw that wasn't the right route.'' Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor also was initially surprised by the pick, and earlier this week seemed concerned that Ginn was falling behind because of the combination of his lingering sprained left foot and the NCAA rule that prohibited him from attending practices and minicamps until his Ohio State class had graduated – which occurred today. Ginn was seen at the Dolphins facility today, and is now free of all NFL eligibility restraints, however, his foot may prevent him from practicing. "He needs to be here and learn what he's doing,'' Taylor said. "He's not going to practice, so I don't know how much he'll get done being here. He'll learn a lot on the blackboard but it's a lot different when you put the pads on and you're on the field. … I guess he'll be here this weekend and watching us work, but we need to get him out there and work.'' Holliday said if Ginn could impact the kick return game like Devin Hester did last year (five punts or kickoffs returned for touchdowns) for the Chicago Bears his rookie season, then he'd prove all the, "non-believers'' wrong. "If he can become that kind of player then we'd all benefit from it,'' Holliday said. "I'm not a non-believer in Ginn. When you're a first-round pick then the pressure and expectation is that much more. … He's fast and can stretch the field for us, but he has to get healthy and get into camp. "I'm not trashing the pick and I'm not trashing Ginn. I wish him nothing but success and look forward to him helping us win games.'' The Dolphins are taking no action against Holliday for his published criticism of the team. "It's a non-issue,'' said Dolphins spokesperson Harvey Greene. "Vonnie said his remarks were taken out of context and we stand behind that.'' DT Holliday's criticism of Dolphins taken out of context: South Florida Sun-Sentinel |
