No. 1 Memphis remains lone unbeaten team

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Chris Douglas-Roberts scored with 2:31 left to break a 60-all tie, and top-ranked Memphis remained the country's only undefeated team Saturday by pulling out a 70-64 victory over Texas-El Paso.

The Tigers (21-0, 7-0 Conference USA) are enjoying their best start ever, topping the 20-win start by the 1985-86 squad. They also extended the nation's longest home-court winning streak to 44 in the first of a four-game homestand.
This was the tightest game this season for a team that had been winning league games by an average of 25.7 points.

UAB falls in final seconds to No. 1 Memphis

Sunday, February 17, 2008 STEVE IRVINE
News staff writer

While his team was on the wrong end of a pair of calls by the officials in the final minute of Saturday night's 79-78 Conference USA loss to top-ranked Memphis, UAB head coach Mike Davis didn't spend his postgame talk with reporters complaining.

"We can't complain about calls," Davis said. "If we did then I'd be 90 years old and in a mental hospital. Once it's over, it's over; you can't get it back."

Many fans in the Bartow Arena record crowd of 9,392 who filtered out - at least the ones wearing green - had a different viewpoint. And Robert Vaden, the UAB player involved in two critical plays in the final seconds, also questioned the calls. ......

In the end, all that mattered was Memphis (25-0, 11-0 C-USA) did what was necessary to remain the country's lone unbeaten team.
