Miller wins community assist award

NBA.com: Grizzlies’ Miller Wins Community Assist Award for May

Quote:
The Memphis Grizzlies forward Mike Miller has been named the recipient of the NBA Community Assist Award for May, in recognition of his outstanding efforts in the community and for his ongoing philanthropic and charitable work.
Miller is being honored for his recent $200,000 donation to the Grizzlies House at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the largest individual commitment ever made by a Grizzlies player to the Hospital. To recognize the contribution, St. Jude will rename The Grizzlies House Fitness Room the Mike and Mavrick Miller Room, after Mike and Jennifer Miller’s two young sons.

“My wife and I are believers that every child should have an opportunity. A lot of stuff that I do is for children because I think that the whole key to life is your start,” said Miller, explaining his charitable choices. “You make the biggest impact on children when they are young. You hope they take the right path and make the right decisions.”

Grizzlies House is a short-term housing facility on the St. Jude campus for patients and families undergoing outpatient treatment. The facility can house up to 100 families at one time. As a team, the Memphis Grizzlies have committed more than $5 million to fund the home.

In addition to his support of Grizzlies House, Miller also established the Mike Miller Foundation in order to provide aid to disabled and disadvantaged children. The Foundation has donated more than $1.5 million to organizations such as the Sanford Children’s Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Houston High School Athletic Program in Collierville, TN. Miller and his wife have also made numerous contributions to help disaster victims and assist relief efforts all over the world.
