JaMarcus Russell Heisman candidate?

Are you kidding? LSU's JaMarcus Russell, who may not even be the best quarterback on his team, is a 75-1 shot to win the Heisman Trophy this season according to oddsmakers. Never mind the fact that Russell, who passed for nearly 2,500 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2005, was last season in a three-way quarterback battle with Peach Bowl MVP Matt Flynn and talented youngster Ryan Perriloux. Russell may not even start; how in the world can he be considered a serious contender for the Heisman?

Because betting is not a science...a gamble will gamble on anything and 75:1 odds will draw out a few from the woodworks...

Re: JaMarcus Russell Heisman candidate?

Actually, not a bad way for Russell to open the season. As the starting QB, he completed 13 of his 17 pass attempts for 255 yards and three touchdowns in LSU's 45-3 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. True, the Ragin' Cajuns aren't a real NCAA power, but it wasn't a poor outing at all for the Tigers quarterback. So do you think the odds on Russell improve a bit after this showing?

After Florida, Russell is completely off the board as a Heisman candidate. In fact, I think it's high time that Flynn gets more of an opportunity. LSU is almost certainly out of the West championship race now, so what's the harm in giving a few other quality players more playing time?

At 75-1, was he ever really IN the Heisman race? And yeah, I agree, chsbletz - LSU should play Flynn. They've got nothing to lose.
