Re: Cowboys love those LSU Tigers LSU's presence in the Dallas Cowboys locker room has grown considerably the last four seasons. The Cowboys have drafted four Tigers in each of the last four drafts, beginning with former West Monroe stud Bradie James getting drafted in 2003. The next year, it was guard Stephen Peterman headed to Dallas. In 2005, defensive end Marcus Spears went to the Cowboys in the first round. This year, Dallas drafted receiver/returner Skyler Green. There are more LSU players with the Cowboys than any other school. It's not by coincidence. Since Bill Parcells became head coach in 2003, he's made certain to draft an LSU player he thinks can help the program. "They've been through a system that's familiar to what we do with head coaches (Nick) Saban and (Les) Miles," said Jeff Ireland, the Cowboys' vice president of pro and college scouting.
"They have a very good track record of developing players. It's critical at this level that players continue to develop with whether they've been in the league five years or 10 years.
"We know those players have been through that system and have been tested and been coached."
It's an easier transition to the NFL for LSU players because the Cowboys' system is familiar to them. It all goes back to Parcells.
Parcells' system influenced New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who served as his assistant and his defensive coordinator in Parcells' three stops -- the New York Giants, the Patriots and the New York Jets.
Belichick's defense led the Giants to Super Bowl wins in 1986 and 1990.
Belichick left the Giants for his first head coaching assignment with the Cleveland Browns in 1991. Saban was one of his defensive assistant coaches.
"I always call coach Parcells the godfather and those guys are the capos," James said.
Parcells preached his strategy for success and his disciples Belichick and Saban have spread the word. This is cool an LSU-Cowboy connection...I like this kid Skyler...he has a motor on him in the return game...anyone know anything about this kid? |
