BATON ROUGE -- Once upon a time, Alabama and LSU played furious football games with the pride of the universities, the states and the prestige of the programs on the line.
That template still applies, but the coaching chronology at the schools has fractured it.
The needlepoint along the fringe of many Louisiana quilts now reads something like this: Nick Saban became LSU's coach in 2000 and led the Tigers to the Bowl Championship Series title during the 2003 season. In 2004, he left LSU for the Miami Dolphins, and in 2007 he committed an unforgivable act by becoming the Crimson Tide's coach.
