BATON ROUGE -- This whole two quarterback thing, which LSU Coach Les Miles said is a work in progress for the Tigers, has an eerily familiar ring in the Southeastern Conference.
As No. 1-ranked LSU (5-0, 2-0) has steamrolled the competition this season, fifth-year senior Matt Flynn, whom Miles selected the starter in the offseason, has yielded time in some games to sophomore Ryan Perrilloux.
Last season, en route to a national championship, the Florida Gators employed a similar offense. Tim Tebow, a bullish quarterback who now controls the Florida offense, as a freshman split time with longtime starter Chris Leak, then a senior. The combination of Tebow's ability to run the ball in traffic and short-yardage situations, with Leak's passing, elusiveness and experience, made the Gators a difficult team to defend.
It came into play when Florida defeated LSU 23-10 at The Swamp last season. In a play Tigers defenders say they still vividly recall, Tebow plunged toward the goal line only to leap above the scrum at the last second and jump shot a touchdown pass over the mound of bodies.
Miles insists LSU's playbook isn't a carbon copy.
"I don't know if we studied how they did it," Miles said. "Certainly, Coach (Urban) Meyer did it. It was always a thought of mine to incorporate the talents of your team. You decline the opportunity to bring different talents in the game if you close your mind to being a one-quarterback team."
