| LSU backfield committee knows how to get results BATON ROUGE -- Less than a year ago, with LSU deep into a season of running back by committee, Coach Les Miles made it clear he would like to see a back establish himself as the go-to guy. After the way the first couple of games have gone this season, talk of a single go-to back is no longer part of the No. 2-ranked Tigers' offensive discussion. If a player could "take over the position," he would, Miles said, but the team's talent is too deep at the running back position for that to occur, and coaches and players said they couldn't be happier with that development. On the eve of the season, it seemed as if sophomore Keiland Williams would be the starter, because he was coming off a breakout game against Notre Dame in the Tigers' 41-14 victory in the Sugar Bowl at the Superdome. Instead, Miles announced senior Jacob Hester would be the starter, and he has answered the call with career highs of 14 carries at Mississippi State on Aug. 30 and 81 yards against then-No. 9 ranked Virginia Tech at Tiger Stadium. Still, Hester hasn't stolen the show. Williams delivered an electrifying performance against the Hokies, gaining a career-best 126 yards on seven carries in the Tigers' 48-7 victory. He scored two touchdowns, one of which was a highlight-film, 67-yard run. Williams is gaining more than 10 yards per carry and has scored twice in three consecutive games dating to the Sugar Bowl. Behind those two, sophomore Charles Scott and freshman Richard Murphy have combined for 67 yards on 15 carries. Overall, LSU has netted just shy of 500 yards rushing in two games.
