Flynn still limited during practice

BATON ROUGE -- LSU fifth-year senior quarterback Matt Flynn returned to practice in full gear Wednesday, but doubts about his being able to play Saturday against visiting Middle Tennessee State remain.

Flynn, who injured his right ankle during Saturday night's 48-7 victory against then-No. 9 ranked Virginia Tech at Tiger Stadium, threw passes in individual drills during the portion of practice open to the media. He appeared to avoid putting a lot of pressure on his ankle, which is his planting foot for throwing passes.

Flynn huddled with trainers during practice and sat out some of the drills.

LSU Coach Les Miles said Flynn did a little more work than on Tuesday, and that he still is questionable.

"He was out there and threw a couple more balls," Miles said. "It'll be day-to-day. I suspect we'll know tomorrow as we get to the back end of the week."

Senior safety Craig Steltz missed his second day of practice with an injured toe, and Miles said he might be able to play against the Blue Raiders. Miles said there isn't a hard and fast rule about injured players playing without practicing.

"It's specific to the player and his experience," Miles said. "A guy that I know has a personal toughness and great conditioning, if he rounds into shape late in the week and has the ability to play to the level of our standard, then he gets to play, guys like Matt and Craig.

"Some guys are too young to do that. Some don't have the ability to miss practice time and still play at a level we're comfortable with. Those guys don't get to play."

If Flynn can't play, sophomore Ryan Perrilloux will start in his place for the No. 2-ranked Tigers. Perrilloux is coming off a strong outing in relief of Flynn against the Hokies. He completed all five of his passes for 84 yards and two touchdowns.
