| Tigers' defense bolsters offense that didn't click STARKVILLE, MISS. -- With LSU leading 10-0 and 5:52 left in the second quarter, it seemed to be a pretty good time to start looking ahead to Sept. 8 and pondering the things the Tigers have to clean up in order to knock out Virginia Tech in their home opener. Certainly, that line of thinking could be construed as a slight of Mississippi State, LSU's season-opening opponent Thursday night. But sometimes reality stinks, and when you're the one being hoisted and dumped into the garbage truck, it can smell like a Hurricane Katrina refrigerator. And reality is the Bulldogs weren't much of a threat, if they were one at all. No reason to needlessly kick a program when it's down. Just know that a team only can ride opening-game, nationally-televised game emotion for so long. Sooner or later, talent is going to take over, and LSU has a truckload more of it than does Mississippi State, as evidenced by a 45-0 victory. Now, the Tigers' offense did next to nothing to allow for the forward thinking. When it's said the unit can use a little more practice, believe the words as if they've been whispered by your most trusted confidant. Because the domination on the scoreboard and stat sheet (a 347-146 advantage in total yards) hardly spoke of the difficulty LSU had on offense. "I feel pretty good about (the game), but we've got a lot of work to do," said quarterback Matt Flynn. Tigers' defense bolsters offense that didn't click- NOLA.com
