BATON ROUGE -- The glass wall between Matt Flynn and the LSU starting quarterback job is about to come down.

For four years he has been close enough to touch -- and once was given a taste -- of being the man in charge. Now the fifth-year senior is one day removed from fulfilling his destiny when No. 2-ranked LSU takes the field at Mississippi State on Thursday at 7 p.m.

His teammates have been champing at the bit for the past month to get the season started. Flynn has been champing a little harder and longer.

"I'm very excited to go," Flynn said Monday. "I'm ready. I've been counting down the days. It's going to be fun. The offense is very quarterback-oriented, a lot is put on me, and I wouldn't want it any other way. I'm confident in myself."

Said senior wide receiver Early Doucet: "I see it in his eyes. He can't wait. He's been waiting so long for this time. He's not going to try to do too much. He's going to take it slowly and then just blow up.
