Gary Crowton has a reputation as a quarterback builder, and his being selected the offensive coordinator at LSU is perfect timing.
The Tigers have to fill a hole created by the loss of quarterback JaMarcus Russell, the No. 1 pick by the Oakland Raiders in April's NFL draft.
Crowton has done this kind of thing before -- turn a relatively unknown player into a star. He turned Tim Rattay of Louisiana Tech and Kellen Clemens of Oregon into NFL quarterbacks, and he made BYU's Brandon Doman a record-setting signal caller in his only year as a starter. Doman and Clemens hit it big in Crowton's first year at those stops.
]LSU's quarterbacks are hopeful for this kind of transformation. Fifth-year senior Matt Flynn possesses all of the natural ability that makes Crowton's offense go and seems to have intangibles like leadership, confidence and resolve down pat. The question is: How will he react to the weekly grind and the speed of the game?
