An upbeat personality, a constant smile and the knack for scaling adversity have been three of Glen Davis’ strongest qualities from the time he was old enough to speak and dribble a basketball.
Thursday night the first two skills were put to a serious test. Starting today, the third will have to front and center as Davis wades into the future.
Davis’ professional basketball future came into focus much later than hoped Thursday as the 2007 NBA draft unfolded at what turned out to be a bittersweet night for the former LSU star.
The 6-foot-9, 285-pound power forward who gained folk hero status as a prep star at University High and during his three years at LSU, was selected in the second round by Seattle with the 35th pick and then traded to the Boston Celtics. That resolution came after a tense night of waiting with about 70 family members and friends, along with former LSU teammates and coaches at Collis Temple’s home in the shadows of the campus where Davis earned fame as “Big Baby.”
