Post LSU Tigers miss SEC Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Dominic de la Osa and Ryan Flaherty each drove in two runs Saturday to lead No. 1 Vanderbilt to a 6-2 victory over LSU at Hawkins Field.

The win completed a sweep of the three-game series for the Commodores (46-10 overall, 22-8 SEC), who claimed the 2007 SEC championship on Thursday with a 4-1 victory over the Tigers.

Vanderbilt will be the No. 1 seed in the SEC Tournament, which begins next Wednesday in Hoover, Ala.

LSU was eliminated from SEC Tournament contention earlier in the day when Tennessee defeated Florida, 11-7, and captured the eighth and final spot in the tournament.

LSU completed its season with a 29-26-21 overall mark, 12-17-1 in the SEC.

"We had hoped to extend our season into the SEC Tournament, but we fell short of that goal this weekend," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. "I think the fact that we were still alive for a bid to the tournament on the final day of the season says a lot about the way our kids competed this year. I feel like in a lot of ways we overachieved this season and I'm very proud of our players for the effort they gave throughout the year."

Re: LSU Tigers miss SEC Tournament

This has got to be a little disappointing for the Tigers. They take a lot of pride in their baseball program, do they not?

There’s never been a Southeastern Conference baseball tournament in Hoover, Ala., a Birmingham suburb, without the LSU Tigers.
That will change Wednesday.

First-round play begins that day with four games, none of which features LSU.

The Tigers finished the regular season in a ninth-place tie with Kentucky and essentially finished in 10th place because Kentucky has the tiebreaker advantage over LSU. The SEC tournament features the league’s top eight teams in a double-elimination format.
Regions Park, formerly known as Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, first hosted the SEC tournament in 1996 and has been the site of the last nine. The LSU logo, like those of the other 11 conference schools, will be on the outfield wall as always, but in all the ways that count the Tigers won’t be represented in Hoover.

“It’s going to be a little different not having them there,” said Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin, whose team is the No. 1 seed for the tournament.

“You don’t ever look at the SEC as not having LSU as a top-eight team.”
