Shreveport Times, LA - 3 hours ago
BATON ROUGE — LSU scheduled a postgame fireworks extravaganza Friday night.
Florida fired up its own during the game and exploded for a 19-3 win in front of the second largest crowd of the season — 4,161 — at Alex Box Stadium. The Gators lit LSU ace Jared Bradford for eight runs on six hits, including a grand slam by Chris Petrie and a two-run homer by Jon Townsend, in two innings and later got two- and three-run homers from Matt LaPorta, who finished 4-for-5 with six RBIs and four runs scored.
Florida (26-25, 13-12 Southeastern Conference) recorded 21 hits in all off three LSU pitchers and handed the Tigers their worst home loss since a 19-3 setback to South Alabama in 1977. It was LSU's worst loss since 28-2 to Alabama in 1997.
"I've always said that hitting is contagious," Florida coach Pat McMahon said. "I think that's what happened tonight against a pitcher we have a lot of respect for."
So much for that boost of confidence for the Tigers. That was the idea behind LSU coach Paul Mainieri starting Bradford on a Friday night for the first time all season. He wanted the Tigers, who have been struggling at home in the SEC, to get off to a good start in a very important final home series of the regular season behind its only dominant pitcher.
