Louisville to hire English, Roof

Heard on ESPN yesterday that Louisville is set to bring in former Michigan defensive coordinator Ron English and ex-Duke head coach Ted Roof to try and help upgrade the defense. Word is the AD gave Kragthorpe an open checkbook to go out and fix what needed to be fixed, and these two moves will be the end result. You like these hires, Cardinals fans?

Don't think it will help. The problem they had was they lost so much experience(players). They have to rebuild a little. Fans need to get of Krag's a$$

How much help can the ex head coach from Duke be. It wasn't like his team was tearing up the conference.

Like Q said, some people are meant to be coordinators, not head coaches. Dick LeBeau comes to mind. And Norv Turner.

The football fans at Louisville will love having Ted Roof on their coaching staff. He is one of the highest quality men in the business, was an All-ACC linebacker at Georgia Tech, and he knows his defensive football. The situation at Duke had too many things off balance during his tenure to get it straight. His players would run through a wall for him and the alumni loved him as a person. I haven't met anyone that knew him that didn't like him. He will definately help Lousiville's defense get back to prominence. Welcome him with open arms and congrats to the head coach for making a great hire.

Comments I've heard is that he is a good
Recruiter and Louisville certainly needs help in recruiting
defensive players. Seems like 75 percent are always offensive recruits.

Re: Louisville to hire English, Roof

Many of Louisville's top football players have come from the state of Georgia. Roof's former territory was with Ga. Tech.
Besides, no one is going to win at Duke unless they are an offensive guru.
Look at Rice, Vanderbuilt, Houston.
.................................................. ...............................................
Here's a look at Roof's profile before going to be head coach at Duke:

Now entering his third year as Georgia Tech?s defensive coordinator, Ted Roof presided over the remarkable improvement of the Rambling Wreck defense in 2000.
Despite starting six freshmen and sophomores, the Tech defense ranked 12th in the nation in rushing defense and 20th in scoring defense last fall, allowing just 19.0 points per game. The Yellow Jackets were also second in the country in turnover margin.

I don't know about anyone else, but these two posts have sold me on Roof. I look forward to seeing what he can to with the Cardinals defense in 2008.

Re: Louisville to hire English, Roof

someone's comments about these hires:

Anyone that really keeps up with College Football and doesn't just read a couple of press clippings knows that BOTH of these hires are HUGE! English is coming from one of College Football's real Elite programs and bringing what he knows to UofL. His defenses throughout the last few years speak for themselves and the fire that he showed on the sidelines of the Capital One Bowl shows me that he's going to light a fire under some players!

Roof is also a good hire because he too built one of the top defenses at a major College Program when he was at GA. Tech. When him and Coach Leary were there, Ga. Tech had one of the best teams in the nation for a few years. Also, don't even fault him for what he did at Duke. He had alot of things going against him. I guarantee it was hard to recruit the type of players he wanted because of the strict academic standards for incoming freshman, the school puts more into basketball, and I think the school is used to losing all the time in football. It's hard to get over that mind set.
