Louisville K Art Carmody has set a new NCAA record for most career points by a kicker. Carmody hit a 41-yard field goal in the first quarter of yesterday's game between the Cardinals and Rutgers, and he finished the game with 433 career points - 10 more than the previous record holder, Houston kicker Roman Anderson.

"I couldn't ask for a better ending," Carmody said. "One of my goals when I came here was to kick a game-winning field goal. It had to come down to the last play of the last game."

Carmody became the all-time leading scorer among Football Bowl Subdivision kickers on Louisville's first drive, booting a 41-yarder to give him 425 points, two more than Houston's Roman Anderson (1988-91). The reigning Lou Groza Award winner also holds the NCAA marks for most extra points and consecutive extra points made, as well as U of L's career scoring record.

But Carmody, who played in many blowout victories earlier in his career, had never been called upon to win a game in the final minute. Not at U of L. Not even in high school.

"The only time I've ever kicked a game-winner is by myself in practice," he said.

Brohm delivered the ball as he was being leveled by defensive end George Johnson. It was Douglas' only catch of the game.

"I was going to get it no matter what," Douglas said.

"That was pretty neat," coach Steve Kragthorpe said. "Brian Brohm passing to Harry Douglas, and Art Carmody knocking one through the pipes. It was a pretty fitting way for those three seniors to end their careers."

U of L scored the final 17 points of the game, and the defense held Rutgers without a first down in the fourth quarter.

Anyone else surprised to learn he didn't win the Lou Groza Award?

I think he had a blocked kick and a couple misses this year??? I'm not sure. Maybe that's why.
