Louisville Coaches looking for clues to lacking performance

“I saw missed assignments, I saw missed tackles, I saw lapses in concentration, I saw bad penalties, I saw things that were inexcusable,” said Cassity, the Cardinals’ defensive coordinator.

“You can’t have a situation where nobody lines up outside to defend a receiver. You can’t ever let something like that happen again. Our job as coaches is to get all that fixed and put our players in situations where they can succeed.

“If we have to simplify things, that’s what we’re going to do. But before I point the finger at any of my players, I look in the mirror at myself. It’s my responsibility.”

If Cassity’s players stood up to opposing offenses as well as Cassity stood up to the criticism of the way his defense played in U of L’s 58-42 victory last night, then Middle Tennessee would not have smoldered to 555 yards

The guy whose defense waved Middle Tennessee through for 42 points is the same coach whose defense allowed a total of 41 points in the first four games last season. You can look it up.

Cassity wasn’t pounding his chest when the Cardinals defense ranked in the top 40 nationally in total defense the last three seasons. He’s not ducking the ugliness of the Cardinals’ performance today.

“If we have to simplify things, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Re: Louisville Coaches looking for clues to lacking performance

It is discouraging that the problem seems to be so widespread, but the coach is right - simplify the scheme so they can execute.
