Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer?

Jeff Kent has been one of the best offensive second baseman of our generation and a pretty good defensive one to boot. He's spent time in Toronto, New York, Cleveland, San Francisco, Houston and now Los Angeles. Here are his numbers, but remember to take into account the era he's played in where all the offensive numbers are up.

2019 Career Games
1186 Runs
2161 Hits
496 Doubles
44 Triples
344 Home Runs
1375 RBIs
93 SBs
.289/.354/.504

In 40 Career Post-Season Games
23 Runs
39 Hits
8 Home Runs
21 RBIs
13 Walks but 32 strike outs
.264/.337/.493

5x All-Star
2000 NL MVP
4x Silver Slugger Award Winner

I know some may make a case because of him being a second baseman, but I wouldn't vote for him.

Cool Re: Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer?

Yes- Kent should get in because he was the most dominant player at his position for an extended period. Unlike Craig Biggio.

No way Kent gets in over Biggio...Biggio was an All-Star at three positions...Kent is more a product of the long ball of the 90's and 00's...I am shocked that you of all people Pundit would make a case for Kent...Dale Murphy was the dominent centerfielder of the 80's (2 MVPs among his stats) and you aren't hollering for him.

Why don't we wait until he finishes his career? He still has plenty of gas left in his trunk. I expect 2-3 decent years out of him in the future.

Re: Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer?

I would have to agree.

I saw him last night against the Dodgers at Shea, and he looked horrible. I miss his Giants' days when he teamed up with Barry Bonds and Rich Aurilla.

Kent was a 2nd baseman so you've got to take his numbers with that in mind. Biggio was just a compiler of stats. Kent was much more dominant. He won an MVP. Biggio couldn't have won an MVP on his best day. Now I'm not trying to knock Biggio - he was a very, very, good player - just not Hall of Fame worthy.

In my opinion, neither of them are.

Not even close...and yeah...Biggio could too have won an MVP ...look at his run scored over the same time span....Biggio was a lead off hitter...a Paul Molitor with a slighly lower Batting average...Kent is a product of the offense explosion of the mid 90's...compare to his peer...Biggio racks better numbers in run scored, getting on base (doesn't he even hold the record for hits by a pitch?) and steals...than Kent does in homers and RBIs...

Its not even close...one (Biggio will make the Hall)...one Kent will not...

You are backing the wrong horse there Pundit...

Re: Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer?

Here are some numbers-
8385 at bats
2386 hits
262 home runs
1061 RBI
.285 lifetime average
1 MVP Award

and

7157 at bats
2070 hits
331 home runs
1312 RBI
.289 lifetime average
1 MVP Award

The first set of numbers belong to Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, the second set were Jeff Kent's coming into this year.

Kent is a Hall of Famer folks, as is Biggio.

Re: Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer?

Yes, but Kent played with the Giants' Barry Bonds during the steroid-Era. That must raise some eyebrows considering his MVP Season in 2000. Ever since he left playing with Bonds in San Francisco, he has been nothing special. That seems a little suspicious even though I can't see him ever taking steroids.

Just keep that in the back of your mind.

Re: Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer?

I don't believe anybody ever looked at the build of Jeff Kent and thought steroids. Kent's numbers will be better than only about a handful of the second baseman already in the Hall, with more homers than any of them. If he doesn't go in, then what second baseman does from now until doomsday?

Re: Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer?

It may not be fair but players of this generation (with their primes being post-1994 strike) will all be looked at with a humongous microscope that past generation of players didn't. Not just the fact the baseballs have been juiced, but ballparks are smaller, pitching quality has decreased, and then yes, steroids will factor into the equation.
