| Re: Is Jeff Kent a Hall of Famer? I just don't know about this guy. His career certainly doesn't match up to that of Biggio or Sandberg. My gut says he won't. He wasn't even the best player on his team the year he won the MVP. We'll see, though. I just don't think one can use MVP awards to justify these kinds of arguments, anyways. Every person who votes has his own criteria. It's an honor, but not really a fair judgment. He only dominated his position for a few years and only after Biggio's career began to decline a bit. Biggio could have been the MVP in 97 or 98...he was in the top five in voting, but writers have failed to notice him and his importance for his entire career. I'm not saying he was robbed, but it wouldn't have been a stretch for him to win it.
Anyways, back to Kent, his power numbers are, of course, impressive for a second baseman, but are not all that impressive otherwise, especially in this era, and his other stats don't really make enough of a difference. He's a good player, but he'd need a bunch of solid years to come to make his other stats solid, and, at 38 or so, I don't think he's got many left. |
