Angels counting on rookies

Good column by Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, in which he talks about the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's tendency to count on rookies and young players to help them win this season.

"Of all the teams annually in contention, the Angels are perhaps the most aggressive in promoting prospects and letting them play in burdensome situations," Passan writes in his articleThe Angels' hope and faith - MLB - Yahoo! Sports. "And so it is again this year, with Jered Weaver and Joe Saunders in the rotation, professional hitter Howie Kendrick playing a super-utility role, Tommy Murphy substituting defensively in the outfield and Napoli, slump willing to abate, behind the plate, that the Angels will live and die by the rookie."

Is this a good idea? Will Mike Scioscia be able to count on these kids down the stretch?

Re: Angels counting on rookies

As of now, Joe Saunders and Jered Weaver seem like Cy Young-potential. It is early in their careers, but they seem to be pitching perfectly. Both with ERA under 2.50 and WHIPs under 1.00, they combine for a 10-0 record. Tommy Murphy is an incredible fielder with a 1.000 PCT and they might as well play Napoli.

They should count on Vladimir Guerrero (of course), Garret Anderson, Juan Rivera and Orlando Cabrera down the stretch. They have a great bunch of rookies (and Ervin Santana) but I am not sure how far they will take them.
