During Paul Byrd's one season with the Angels and even during negotiations for his contract, the team was unaware of his use of human growth hormone or of his pituitary gland issue, according to former general manager Bill Stoneman. Though the Cleveland Indians pitcher said he did "not try to hide anything," Stoneman, who was the team's general manager when Byrd signed a one-year deal with the Angels in December 2004, said Monday that no one in the organization was notified of Byrd's condition or his need to use the drug. "I can tell you for sure I was not aware, nor am I aware that anyone else here is aware," Stoneman said by telephone. "I can give you that answer for every player.
