Angels DH Salmon to retire

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) - Tim Salmon will remain an Angel through and through.

The veteran designated hitter and outfielder will retire following his 15th season as a member of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the team announced on Tuesday.

A new conference with Salmon is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. EDT Thursday.

The 39-year-old Salmon will end his career as the longest tenured member of the Angels (85-71), who remain in contention for the American League West title despite being five games behind the Oakland Athletics with six games to play.

The Angels will conclude the season by hosting the A's for a four-game series starting Thursday.

A member of the Angels' 2002 World Series squad, Salmon will end his career as the franchise leader in home runs (298 ), runs (983) and walks (966). He also owns three single-season club records, including most home runs (31) by a rookie.

The AL Rookie of the Year in 1993, Salmon is hitting just .263 with eight homers and 23 RBI in 71 games this season, his second straight plagued by injuries.

In 1,667 career games, Salmon is a .282 hitter with 1,012 RBI and 661 extra-base hits.

So, it looks as if Salmon doesn't think he can swim with the big fishes anymore? He is possibly the best Angel of all-time leading the franchise in HRs, Runs and Walks.

Now comes the hard question:Hall of Famer?

Now comes the easy answer...nope...unless its the Cali Angels Hall of Fame then yeah...

Salmon was an outstanding hitter but was always slowed by nagging injuries...A HOF? Not even close.

I didn't feel that he was Hall of Fame potential either. I just wanted to hear your perspectives on this matter. Hopefully his teammate, Vladimir Guerrero will make the Hall of Fame. Bartolo Colon is questionable but Troy Percival might be a lock. Chone Figgins was great last year but fell off this year and I would no longer consider him a possible prospect with Hall of Fame potential in his future. First impressions are important but they must last for them to be meaningful.

I have always been a big fan of Tim Salmon as well as the Anaheim Angels. As much as I respect him, I doubt he has the numbers needed for Hall of Fame consideration.
