San Diego stuns UK 81-72 at Rupp

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- University of San Diego basketball coach Bill Grier summed up the feeling in Rupp Arena yesterday when he walked into his postgame news conference.
"How about, wow?!" Grier said.
An already tumultuous basketball season for the University of Kentucky had just hit another low as the Wildcats dropped an 81-72 decision before 23,756 stunned fans.
San Diego -- which had losses to Stephen F. Austin, San Diego State and Boise State -- led the nation's all-time winningest program for all but 48 seconds, hit 16 consecutive free throws in the final 7:13 and dealt the reeling Cats their fifth loss in six games.
"I really don't have anything to say to (upset UK fans)," Cats coach Billy Gillispie said. "I couldn't disagree with them very much the way we've played. I think we are getting better, and I thought we'd perform much better, but we didn't."
While perhaps not as stunning as UK's first loss of the season -- to Gardner-Webb -- this setback adds to the mounting frustrations in Lexington. Derrick Jasper and Jodie Meeks returned to the floor, but the Cats still dropped to 5-6.
"I'm shocked," UK senior Ramel Bradley said. "I really thought we was going to come out here and take care of our own court. I thought we were prepared to play, and I thought we just had to come out and take care of business."
San Diego point guard Brandon Johnson had 27 points to lead San Diego, and freshman walk-on Devin Ginty had the game of his life with 18 points.
Ginty became the latest thorn in the side of UK fans, just as Gardner-Webb's Grayson Flittner did earlier.
The 6-foot-2 Ginty hit 5 of 5 field–goal attempts, including four three-pointers, and all four free throws.
"He's played well for them all year," Gillispie said.
Ginty had played 38 total minutes and scored five points the entire season.
"It's just a dream to play in a place like this," he said. "It's a really great feeling to come in here and get the win. We knew we didn't have too much to lose."
But for UK, there was plenty at stake.
The Cats had lost four games in a row before a win over Tennessee Tech last week supposedly sent their season in the right direction.

For Wildcats, it's more of the shame

Four losses in a row and thy can stop a 6-2 shooter....sounds like this program needs a major overhaul.

Losses to San Diego and Garner-Webb, four straight losses and what, 5 of their last 6 now? So who's gonna coach this team next year?

don't know...but the coach has to take the fall when a big program fails to deliver...he has to...Especially if you were around to recruit the team on the floor.

Gillispie is taken the heat. I ain't given up yet. He has many obstacles to overcome. He inherited a team that had fallen out of the top 25. He has to deal with Tubby's players that were left. Those guys have been a handful. His first year at a team is not stellar that has been proven at his two previous teams. I still hold the position that we are better off than with Tubby. I just hope fans can give him a chance. Most fans I have talked to all agree with me, that we are way better off than with Tubby.
